Too hot for the baby bok choi

Well the greenhouse has turned out to be either too hot, or too much of a temperature variation for the bok choi. They are going straight to seed, and flower.

I actually thought it was because there were too many plants close together, but after separating the plants they still go straight to flower. Oh well today they will be removed and replaced with something else… oh well maybe we will try again in the fall. (or get some better/different seeds)

Poly Grow Bags

To maximize space we were looking for some plastic pots and could get only 2 gallon ones from Home Depot for $2 each (walmart had sold out of the 88cent pots of course), so I remembered from my old hoop house growing days of propagating plants when I was a teenager that I used to use plastic bags for growing. So after a little searching I found the name of them, Poly Grow Bags and got some from wormsway.com . It was only $2 for 10, 2 gallon bags with white outside and black inside. The best thing was they were delivered in just 4 days , I did the order Monday at lunchtime and they were here in Colorado Thursday lunchtime, and they were sent fedex ground, the worlds worst carrier!!

Here is a link to the bags from the same seller on Amazon:

Week 5

A little later reporting the growth this week as I had to go to training in Dallas this week for work, but the greenhouse is growing growing growing…

Giant Tree tomotoes - progress, week 5 and look at them!

This is now I think week 5 since we received these seedlings and planted them, out of the 3 pots of seeds, only 2 pots produced 1 seedling each. We just transplanted them into their bags.

Week 4…the sun is shining

Well week 4 of the growth cycle has come and gone, and everything is on track and no deaths… Althought the Giant Tree Tomatoes are still faultering. Here is what is all looks like:

Week 3 of growth…its getting there

Week 3 has come along, the greenhouse averages 50 degrees at night and 90 at its hottest during the day. Our plants are coming along slowly but surely, so far the winner is the strawberry plants bought from seedlings.

The giants are rising

Our giant tree tomatoes bought from the infomercial on tv are finally sprouting! JustĀ  11 days after opening the box and watering the plants. We were just about to write a email to the company we bought them from asking about germination time!

The snow is over, lets turn summer back on!

Ok after the brief interlude of snow for a day and freezing temperatures its over .

This morning we awoke to find clear skies, but still a temperature or a mere 28 F ! brrrrrrr.

The greenhouse was heated to stop everything freezing, just a simple 1500w ceramic fan heater set at 55 F, it turned off and on a lot, so the greenhouse is holding some heat with its little thermal mass. We did try buckets of water in the green house to try and store some heat and absorb some heat, but frankly I am coming to think this idea is just a waste of space. Maybe the wall of water idea would work better . At least this method we used with water in buckets did supply some evaporation and moisture to the greenhouse in this dry climate.

Here is this mornings temperature being held mainly by the heater:

This mornings temp of 56F outside 28 F

The heater working away..costing is money…(thankfully electricity is just 9.8 cents per kwh up here!)
